Political ads are always geared toward moderates or independents not solid blue or red voters with over the top emotional appeals. No one thinks these ads are going to change minds in the other camp. The Stranger analyzing this is near pointless, no one on the staff would ever admit it has a point even if it objectively did.

Ugh. The only thing more tedious that political advertising is overwrought analysis of political advertising. What a waste of time.

WA state Republicans have wasted thirty years trying to stop Patty Murray, making themselves look ever more foolishly desperate with each successive failure. Looks like they’re still not doing the learning.

This particular ad is truly novel, making it worth noting. At least it's the first example I've ever seen of an attack ad posing as a supportive one. Its polar opposite (a supportive ad posing as an attack ad) was similarly novel a decade ago -- remember Todd Akin, "the TRUE conservative who's TOO conservative" -- but has become fairly common as Dems, wisely or not, try to goad Republicans into nominating supposedly "unelectable" extremists. I don't think this one will be nearly as effective, but it's definitely an interesting attempt. (Thanks to Hannah for finding a video clip of this ad online. The first time I saw it on TV I looked and looked, to no avail.)

Well, when Republican candidates have nothing to offer, the ads get even dumber. Was Dino Rossi not available to lose again?

13

Considering how many republican ads play one after another (with more now than during presidential elections), they are desperate. It’s one tactic out of many they use to sell the MAGA agenda. Why would anyone vote for smiley when she STILL has orange powder all over her face and crotch?

14

Hannah, I'd say both options are capable of being true....

15

On the other hand, this may just be some political consultant's attempt to impress other political consultants. (It's a shoo-in for a Pollie nomination.)

5 and 6…. Amen to that. A guy like that has to be living in his mothers basement.
