"An increase in the number of disillusioned, college-aged voters nationwide could spell trouble in the upcoming general election for" disillusioned, college-aged voters nationwide who allow Trump to be elected.
It's how Trump won the election in 2016. Too many democrats didn't bother to vote, and Trump backed into winning the electoral vote.
If you really want to vote for Trump, then just move back to Texas. Lots of jobs for you in Texas. They all pay $7.25. You'll like that single-wide you'll be living in.
Sorry but if your university educated hot take is, âthey both are equally bad old men so Iâm just going to stay home,â youâre an idiot. Which, if it was just you getting screwed over by your idiocy, fine! But what your selfish idiot self fails to see is that your toxic mix of idealism and fatalism is actually helping to doom the rest of us to fascism and Christian nationalism and hyper capitalism, while also further screwing over the people and causes you purport to care most about
Yes Democrats suck but Republicans are far worse across the board and are now a threat to the political process itself. They need to be defeated. After that, please do demand more from Democrats. Maybe even form new, better movements! But just staying home does nothing and never will
The United States has terrible voter turnout. It was considered epic in 2020 (66.7% of eligible voters voted) and we all know why so many people voted. Since 1980, only slightly more than 50% of the eligible voters in the United States have voted in presidential elections). Consider in those numbers the enormous percentage of people living here that cannot vote (any citizen under the age of 18, anyone living in Washington D.C., anyone living in Puerto Rico, anyone living here legally yet not a citizen, and all of the people living here "illegally."
The pathetic state of our country.
Trump not being imprisoned for being a traitor the moment he was ousted from the White House (after attempting to have his own VP murdered) is why we are currently facing another Trump presidency. I won't vote for Biden. I won't vote for Trump. I will, however, vote. So there's that.
The lede simply cannot be buried any further down than in the very last paragraph:
âWith the uncommitted delegate protest vote falling short,â
So, thatâs the reason for this muddle:
âAn increase in the number of disillusioned, college-aged voters nationwide could spell trouble in the upcoming general election for President Joe Biden,â
â⊠the latest polling, which shows the President currently 30 points under water with 18 to 39-year-olds.â
So, if a segment of the voters in which heâs doing poorly decides not to vote, thatâs bad for him?
@9: âI won't vote for Biden. I won't vote for Trump. I will, however, vote. So there's that.â
According to this headline post, you have many disaffected UW students with whom to preen about your incredible moral superiority. Iâm sure theyâll agree with your judgment. (You can feel proud of that, too!)
Lazy superficial opinions that all candidates and parties are the same. They probably have no idea how government actually works, imagining that a president can simply decree outcomes.
Same boring story of the past 60 years + recycled over, and over, and over again. Swap the primary issues in and out, it always boils down to the same self-indulgent tantrum. Of course, the absolutely hilarious part is they are stomping their feet and holding their breath because the first recorded generation to do this whiny naval gazing, the boomers "won't listen to them". Same bit the boomers said about the WW2 and Silent Gen.
In 60 years the college kids will be shouting at this person for not listening to them.
@9 âI won't vote for Biden. I won't vote for Trump. I will, however, vote. So there's that.â Who? Kennedy?
Give me a fucking break. Any vote not for Biden is a vote for Trump. Donât believe me? Go talk to all the sad sack dipshits who regret voting for Nader.
The presidential election is about more than just Gaza - if young voters canât understand that then I hope you enjoy an even more conservative Supreme Court stripping even more rights from us all (say goodbye to gay marriage, protection against anti-sodomy laws, etc.). DSA does not have your best interests at heart.
Ironically this old, cis-gendered, heterosexual, upper-middle-class White guy cares more about the future of a Democratic society with access to reproductive healthcare, LGBTQ+ rights, racial equity, affordable healthcare, and debt-free college than a bunch of whiners at UW who will have to live the next 50 years of their lives in a shitty authoritarian religious state that their apathy is helping to bring about.
@13 you're entitled to your opinion. I, however, will vote for someone who is not an old white man. If Trump wins, it won't be those who didn't vote for Biden who are to blame, it is the Biden administration and everyone in congress who will be to blame, for allowing Trump to run again and for not putting up a viable Democrat candidate for whom people in this country want to vote.
Vote Blue No Matter Who has gotten us nowhere. I refuse to vote for Biden. He has armed and funded Israel to the teeth while people in this country are homeless, hungry, without health care, and have had and continue to have their rights stripped from them by an illegitimate, unethical, and corrupt SCOTUS and federal judiciary.
Biden is also running on the exact same platform as last time - "vote for us and you'll get your rights back!" Excuse me while I don't hold my breath for the Democrats to allow women to have bodily autonomy like men, allow any non-white person in this country to have the same rights as every white person, allow LGBQT+ people to have the same rights as heterosexual breeders, or anyone, anywhere, to have the same rights as Donald Trump, who apparently is beholden to no one and will never be held to account for anything.
And I will sleep with a clear conscience. All of the bullying by the VOTE FOR BIDEN OR ELSE camp is just as anti-democratic as the MAGA cult.
@3
If they are truly concerned about the plight of the Palestinians, theyâd go there to help.
They could volunteer with humanitarian groups working to get aid in. That would actually do some good.
Anybody can block traffic while demanding a ceasefire. It doesnât accomplish anything though
Oh and look on the bright side, despite it being directly tied to their losing down ballot elections, the RNC has now officially abandoned efforts to encourage Republicans to vote early and through mail-in ballots. According to them the Democrats vote early and often.
@17: âIf Trump wins, it won't be those who didn't vote for Biden who are to blame,â
Thatâs right! Election outcomes do not result from decisions made by voters. They result from candidates not being pure and perfect enough for you! You go, girl!
@18 Israel isn't allowing any aid in (oh wait, today they allowed 115 tonnes of food in from World Central Kitchen). Fascinating, though, since WCK SENT 200 tonnes of food in the first shipment (the other shipment hasn't arrived yet). So did Israel steal 85 tonnes of food?
There have been hundreds of aid trucks sitting at the border of Egypt and Gaza for weeks now. Israel has refused to allow any aid in and when aid has managed to get in, Israel has murdered people trying to obtain it. Pure fucking evil shooting and killing and running people over with tanks as they try to obtain food because they are being starved to death.
Israelis have had picnics and carnivals there eating and eating and eating and celebrating the starvation of Palestinians. Starving people is a war crime. Starving people to death is an act of genocide and something Israel was told explicitly NOT to do.
Holding parties while you starve people to death is Nazi behavior. The Zionists are the Nazis now.
If the world had any balls it would eliminate Israel (since it isn't a real country, it's an occupation of Palestine). The truth of the matter is Israel would be neutered completely without the hundreds of billions of American taxpayer dollars Biden has sent to Israel (and at least 3X he's gone around congress and sent them weapons, which he so righteously said in 2020 that Fuhrer Trump had no right to do, that congress had to approve any weapons sent anywhere or any "war" Trump wanted to be involved in or more importantly, start).
Meanwhile American taxpayers could use those hundreds of billions of dollars sent to Israel, because American taxpayers are (in unprecedented numbers): homeless, hungry, without health care, without human rights - depending on who they are - and governed by a corrupt and wholly ineffectual government that does nothing but get crazier and crazier and crazier and crazier. They sure do love collecting their paychecks, though!
These kids were all preteens when Trump was elected in 2016, and largely sheltered from the shitshow that ensued. You're all grown up now. Time to act like it.
11/5 - Vote for Jill Stein, Cornell West or RFK JR. Congratulate yourself for your political purity.
11/6 - Join the other purists in a massive temper tantrum over the "injustice" of another impending Trump presidency.
Every presidential race for the past 50+ years where the Democratic Party has ignored the interests of older voters in favor of the wishes of that desirable college student demographic, they have been handily beaten at the polls. But sure, maybe this time will be different.
I too once subscribed to opinions like the author's and didn't vote at times. That was in my 20's. Now I am in my 50's and I believe that many young folks like myself who didn't vote helped to create the current climate. George W got reelected and young folks didn't vote nearly as much as their older and conservative counterparts who are more prone to fall for "fearmongering" tactics. We were given a color for how elevated the terror risks were at any given moment. Now it's the border. These tactics are designed to scare older voters because they vote in much higher numbers and are more easy to influence as a whole. Young folks, study the history, get your head out of your butts and get out the vote. Our choices in life aren't always perfect and the responsible thing is to pick the best choice, not bury your head in the sand. If you don't think there is no better choice between the two then you are lost anyway.
@23 not going to do either of those things and as I have stated, repeatedly, endlessly, the damage done to our country was done by Trump season one and the country will be finished off by SCOTUS and the federal judiciary even if Biden has a second season (and doesn't die during it).
There's also this other problem that is not being addressed. This country's deep seated racism (Obama's presidency) and deep seated misogyny (Hillary Clinton running for president) put Trump in the White House. The only people to blame for Trump even having a first term are white people (many of them white women) and the only people to blame for Trump even having a shot at a second term are all of the people currently in power, who you insist need to be put in power again, because they've allowed it to happen. Why do all of the VOTE FOR BIDEN OR ELSE crowd think it matters who is president in 2025? It literally doesn't. Not with the current SCOTUS and federal judiciary. Everything this country has done in the last 100 years will be undone by the time SCOTUS is finished torching the Constitution.
If you think that everyone who voted for Biden the first time to keep Trump from having a second season will do the same knowing there is a chance Kamala Harris will become president, you are severely underestimating what put Trump in the White House the first time. Biden adding to that with the very epic mistake of acting like he's the president of Israel and not the U.S. is just more shit in the shit bowl.
@29: âBiden adding to that with the very epic mistake of acting like he's the president of Israel...â
Actually, most of the âceasefire!â crowd seems to believe he actually is Absolute Dictator of All Israel, hence itâs his fault the IDF continues killing Hamas in Gaza.
Again and last time today because I am so tired. Denial of facts do not make them cease to exist. Disliking hearing facts, also does not make them cease to exist. Telling people over and over the same bullshit that does not include any facts does not make facts cease to exist.
The Biden administration has done NOTHING while president to fix the SCOTUS problem, the TRUMP is a traitor who attempted to murder Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi and overthrow the government problem, or the people in this country don't support sending Israel hundreds of billions of American taxpayer dollars and fuck tons of weapons problem.
Trump, again, is NOT MICHAEL MYERS. His "brain" is literally rotting in his skull. He will not live forever. He is NOT THE PROBLEM. 153 seditionists in congress are a problem. SCOTUS and the federal judiciary are serious, we are unbelievably fucked problems.
SCOTUS CAN AND WILL DESTROY THE COUNTRY NO MATTER WHO IS PRESIDENT.
LOOK WHAT THEY HAVE ALREADY DONE WHILE BIDEN HAS BEEN IN OFFICE.
How can anyone believe they will stop destroying the Constitution and the country as long as everyone falls in line and votes for BIDEN?
The Supreme Court could strip power away from Congress and the president in several cases this term in ways that will make life worse for everyday Americans. This is not an opinion. It is an actual fact!
Assault on Government Could Make the Far-Rightâs Dreams Come True
https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-supreme-courts-assault-on-government-could-make-the-far-rights-dreams-come-true/
From the article:
After two terms in which a radical majority on the Supreme Court has clawed back long-cherished rights, precedents, and laws, the court has now set its sights on grabbing power from voters and gutting the ability of the government to serve American families. It is hearing a series of cases that, individually, would undermine core functions and operations of the federal government and, together, would incapacitate governance. Ultimately, this would thwart the will of voters by grabbing power away from the elected branches of government and instead resting them with judges (who are not elected by the people) with lifetime tenure.
Perhaps we can recall Xinaâs Paradox from our Philosophy classes. Even if Biden takes some part of the way towards the better country she envisions, we still have the rest of the way to go, so things are terrible. And when the next President also improves things somewhat, weâre still not all the way there, so kings are still awful. And so on. So we can never get to the utopia she imagines.
This article may be the best justification I've ever seen for a major overhaul of UW's admission standards considering the staggering amount of dumbassery it documents.
@36: "Perhaps we can recall Xinaâs Paradox from our Philosophy classes."
Nicely done, sir! No matter how fast we run, or how far we go, xina always remains at least one tiny step ahead of us, due to her self-proclaimed Infinite Purity (TM). It is mathematically impossible for us ever to achieve the paradise she demands. For this, she always and emphatically blames us. (And Amanda Knox.)
@39: I have to wonder what xina believes a government of 'un-Occupied Palestine' (@21) would do, if her genocidal desire of wiping Israel from the map would ever be realized. Does she somehow imagine women and LGBTQ+ persons there would have anything near the rights they enjoy in Israel today?
Again, Stranger, I hope you enjoy xina providing all of your substance, utterly bereft of any style to mitigate the message of hate. You have richly earned her.
@37 Separation of powers has nothing to do with Gorsuck, the alcoholic rapist and the literal cult member being put on the court (all illegitimate, all unequivocally unqualified, all totally corrupt, and all hell bent on burning the Constitution, bit by bit, until it simply no longer exists). They've gotten a horrific start and there is so much more coming.
To return to your point, it proves mine. It doesn't matter who the president is, SCOTUS will do what it is going to do and no one will stop them, especially with 153 traitors (or seditionists if you prefer) sitting in congress.
The separation of powers guarantees it, especially since our government has chosen not to use the checks and balances that are the reason the separation of powers was created in the first place (so that no one arm of the government could be more powerful or more destructive than any other).
I'm voting for the Socialist Equality Party candidates Joseph Kishore & Jerry White. They're the only candidates sufficiently addressing the pandemic, the genocide in Gaza, and the war in Ukraine and the great danger of nuclear war. They also support full guaranteed health care and an end to poverty.
I see Biden as the greater evil because Trump wants to end the war in Ukraine and has said he wouldn't give Zelensky one more penny - which is absolutely the correct attitude. He has also addressed the danger of nuclear war, while Biden is bringing us headlong into WW III.
RFK Jr is great on Ukraine and the intelligence state and restoring the independence of the presidency, but he's out-of-touch with the economic issues facing Americans. He's also dropped the ball on the pandemic along with Stein, West, and De La Cruz - and why my vote is going to the lesser-known but more deserving SEP instead.
I anticipate that the Libertarian candidate choice will be strong on foreign policy, but they'll be awful on health care. We need a single payer system and someone in office with the balls (or ovaries) to reinstate the pandemic emergency and immediately exercise executive authority on that basis to open Medicare to the whole country.
Yes, I realize this isn't going to happen - but I realize we don't have real elections.
I absolutely loathe the Democrats, though, at this point, particularly these "vote blue no matter who" idiots along with the "stand with Ukraine" war mongers - and I see Biden as the worst president in U.S. history. But he will probably be reelected and it makes me want to vomit.
@35 Holy shit, xina - you literally have no clue how the U.S government is actually set up and works. Maybe the reason you are so tired is because you spend all of your time spouting literal nonsense.
I'm shocked - SHOCKED, I tell ya - that your congresspeople never respond to your "multiple emails a day"... why would anyone respond to gibberish?
@43 Reinstate the "pandemic emergency?" Jesus Christ... when did the loony bin discharge all their patients?
"Stand with Ukraine war mongers"????? So you support Russia invading another country? Have fun supporting Putin since you're obviously a Trump supporting idiot.
Iâm sorry, Xina. I didnât know that you use a wheelchair. But actually, you could bowl if you have upper body ability. The father of one of my roommates from college owned a chain of Brunswick Gold Pin Family Fun Centers (bowling alleys) and even back then they had a âwheelchair leagueâ (their name) at a few of the locations. Iâm sure thereâs alleys here in Seattle that offer it.
@48 I thought that was well known here. TBH I wasn't good at bowling before I became disabled. I also live in Oregon now (left Seattle a long time ago).
The lazy, entitled, and privileged UW students who aren't going to vote should read two articles blow from the Washington Post today. Those that don't understand the need to support Ukraine should read them as well. Protests against Putin's regime in Moscow. Ukrainians forced to vote for Putin.
And Trump supports Putin and wants to be like him.
If you can't be bothered to take part is the most basic part of our government - voting for elected officials - your privilege is showing. Your entitlement is showing. Your ingorance is showing. And your laziness is showing. Be careful what you wish for: millions of people around the world are fighting for their right to vote, to make their voices heard. And yet spoiled college students can't be bothered to fill out a ballot that's mailed to them weeks in advance and that can be dropped into the mail.
@51: Their âuncommittedâ performance art project having flopped miserably, the Stranger now publishes an article proclaiming not voting has become understandable, if not acceptable. Here in the modern Stranger, if people donât vote the way you want, then encourage them not to vote at all.
The Strangerâs ever-expanding contempt for our democracy and rule of law continues unabated.
âThe tragedy of all this is that George McGovern, for all his mistakes and all his imprecise talk about ânew politiesâ and âhonesty in governmentâ is one of the few men whoâve run for president of the United States in this century who really understands what a fantastic monument to all the best instincts of the human race this country might have been, if we could have kept it out of the hands of greedy little hustlers like Richard Nixon.
McGovern made some stupid mistakes, but in context they seem almost frivolous compared to the things Richard Nixon does every day of his life, on purpose, as a matter of policy and a perfect expression of everything he stands for.

Trump WILL set up Muslim Concentration Camps and mass deport Americans who are Muslim.
Period.
There are consequences to your actions.
If Trump wins, it won't be those who didn't vote for Biden who are to blame
Yes, that is exactly who will be to blame.
@29: it absolutely does matter who's president in 2025.
There's a certain segment of the left who fantasize about living in the second act of "Cabaret", but I guarantee they won't like it if they get there.
Dear Xina, always such a ray of sunshine. They must be such a joy at parties.
@39 thanks for making me laugh.
Thatâs nice, Jay Bird. Maybe you and Our Dear Xina should get together and go bowling. Take your mind off things for a while.
@43 Reinstate the "pandemic emergency?" Jesus Christ... when did the loony bin discharge all their patients?
"Stand with Ukraine war mongers"????? So you support Russia invading another country? Have fun supporting Putin since you're obviously a Trump supporting idiot.
@45 now you're just being mean. I can't bowl in a wheelchair.
@48 thought it was common knowledge here. TBH I was terrible bowler when I wasn't disabled. LOL I live in Oregon now.

The Strangerâs ever-expanding contempt for our democracy and rule of law continues unabated.
from Rolling Stone:
âThe tragedy of all this is that George McGovern, for all his mistakes and all his imprecise talk about ânew politiesâ and âhonesty in governmentâ is one of the few men whoâve run for president of the United States in this century who really understands what a fantastic monument to all the best instincts of the human race this country might have been, if we could have kept it out of the hands of greedy little hustlers like Richard Nixon.
McGovern made some stupid mistakes, but in context they seem almost frivolous compared to the things Richard Nixon does every day of his life, on purpose, as a matter of policy and a perfect expression of everything he stands for.
