The Climate Catastrophe Will End Humanity, but, Hey, Look on the Bright Side

The apocalypse was inevitable because the cost of being human has always been extracted from the rest of nature. Getty

Yum. Clickbait for sanctimonious progressives!

2

"Charismatic teacher"? Sure, in the sense that Eeyore was the most charismatic one in the Pooh books.

3

Thanks Debbie Downer!! Whomp whomp

5

The people that take climate change and other environmental issues seriously are already doing what they can. The people that don't will never, ever change their minds no matter how many professors post sardonic opinion pieces.

6

Just in time for inorganic intelligence to take over.

Great piece, and just the sort of stuff I try not to think about as I'm lying in bed trying to fall asleep at night. I know I'm doing all I can; I know there's only so much that I can do; and after that, I'm going to try to stake out whatever happiness I can get from this one life.

We have met the enemy, and he is us!

11

There is hope for the planet without us. Suggest reading "The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman or Overshoot by William Catton.

12

Derivative and formalistic I'm sorry to say.

I'm not having kids and I'm not pouring poison into my backyard or eating meat or dairy. That is to say, I'm still complicit in the destruction in the world in many, many other ways but once I'm dead I will be dead and I will have done a tiny bit to be a tiny bit better than I could have been. Perhaps it is all inevitable but we can do what we can to clean up a bit while we can ¯(ツ)

In general I agree w Phoebe's assessment about this piece of writing. But I do think it's fine to have a momento mori (planeto mori?) every once in a while. Even for the dry-ass Stranger comments crowd

@4 Want ballpark? OK, try 200 to 500 years. If a technological miracle hasn't saved us by then, this scenario is probably more or less accurate.

This also may explain why we haven't yet detected a single truly unambiguous sign of another civilization in our galaxy, despite decades of trying. It's not that they don't exist, but they progress from agrarian to industrial to self-extinction in such a relatively short window of time (either gradually by overwhelming their biosphere as we're doing now, or suddenly by developing WMDs and blowing themselves up with them, as we may yet end up doing) that we just aren't able to catch them when they're there to say hello.

Ahhh! The "use a picture of stream coming from a tall stack" thinking it is smoke.
