One of the nation’s first school shootings took place at Seattle’s Garfield High. Two students were shot after a Martin Luther King Day assembly. How come no one remembers?

Thanks for coming back to this, Eli. I remember the Garfield Messenger getting the story right at the time, when so many others got it so wrong.

I was a freshman at the time, sitting about two tables over from the initial scuffle with the gun. As I looked around to find everyone else on the floor, I recall thinking that I should duck, too.

This was a pivotal moment for me. I joined SAVE and went on to work on a nonviolence film with other students. I'd love to read more about why these shootings happen, and what is being done about it.

I live in Conn.,and after college,my two children moved to Seattle. My husband and I both grew up in New England, but moved to Seattle in2004,to be closer to our kids. They both attended college in small towns, and were looking forward to life in "a cool city".I love Seattle, but my husband and I have returned to Conn.,not due to any criminal activity, because as we know, horrible things can happen anywhere in America. As a mental health professional,I can say, people are unpredictable, and oe never knows the reason why these things happen. My daughter lives within walking distance to Garfield High School, until I read your article,I was not aware of the shooting incident there. Now I'm ambivilent about her staying in Seattle, but also realize this can happen even if I feel she's safer living in "a typical small New England" village.Thank you for your well written article,we must all be aware that this unacceptable violence has to stop NOW!

it should be "why does no one remember?" No writer should use "how come".

Thank God my baby at the time didn't get shot. She was just a few weeks before turning 1 year old. We were picking up my pictures. When we heard gun shots so close that I didn't think that we had time to get out of there. She's now 22 I just was telling her this story the other day. He definitely should have gotten more time. We were traumatized for a long time.

Please wait...
