Anti-War Adovcates Say the Council Is Complicit in Genocide

Sawant brought forward the resolution, but the council wouldn't even talk about it. City of Seattle

1

Seattle City Council decides not to waste time arguing about a war half a world away in order to pass a meaningless resolution signifying nothing. Good stewardship of the taxpayer's money.

2

No support for this resolution.

So move on.

Meanwhile, we have out of control cops in SPOG and a Mayor who keeps trying to subsidize Downtown at the expense of the job-creating neighborhoods that pay the taxes

3

"...council members have justified their “no” votes on Sawant’s past resolutions by arguing that international issues do not fall under their purview."

they're correct. it's a performative trap laid by Sawant. stay out of it - Israel doesn't give a fuck if the council has anything to say, and it can only alienate Seattle's Jewish community.

"complicit" is a ridiculous accusation. Bin Laden justified 9/11 by saying we're all complicit.

5

“Council Members represent Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian Americans in Seattle…” but Jews, not so much…

“I hope that the state of war with Israel will become permanent on all the borders, and that the Arab world will stand with us,” Taher El-Nounou, a Hamas media adviser, told The Times.

7

If CM Sawant and the few citizens of Seattle with Palestinian roots want a cease-fire, then they can take the hint from @6, and sponsor a resolution demanding Hamas release the kidnapped Israeli citizens it continues to hold hostage. This is the precondition set by Israel for a ceasefire.

The resolution they sponsored didn’t cover only a demand for a cease-fire: “… a resolution demanding a ceasefire, an exchange of hostages, humanitarian aid to Gaza, and for the US to stop sending billions of dollars to Israel.”

So no one on the council wanted to demand an end to decades of US support for Israel. Good call.

Finally, it would be great of the Stranger would just admit that CM Sawant’s pronouncements are mostly hot air, and always have been:

“… part of an escalating, global movement, Council Member Kshama Sawant proposed a resolution …”

Comrade Sawant leads unstoppable glorious global movement to total victory on all fronts!

Don’t you guys ever tire of watching such rhetoric fail?

Wow, judging by the commenters on this post so far it really doesn't sound like there was "overwhelming" support for this resolution. Could it be that the only people in chambers yesterday were Sawants ardent followers who would essentially provide the same level of outrage for anything she proffered? Could it also be that those people don't really represent Seattle in any meaningful way? The one funny thing that has come out of Covid is Sawants colleagues can now simply dial in remote rather than sit there and be abused by her and her followers. I'm sure she'll have more success with her national movement. Fare thee well and don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

9

So, this resolution is just a more formalized version of “thoughts & prayers”.

@8: ‘Wow, judging by the commenters on this post so far it really doesn't sound like there was "overwhelming" support for this resolution.’

Yes, but luckily for CM Sawant and the Stranger, there is no evidence the voters of Seattle agree with the Stranger’s commenters.

Wait, what?

“The only progressive who appears to be in safe waters is Dan Strauss of Ballard’s District 6 (he's two points behind Pete Hanning); and, of course, this result will be attributed to his wise and recent shift to the right (BLM bad, police good). SECB soberly only gave Tammy Morales a slim chance of winning. Maybe Lewis can squeak one out. The rest can call it a day.” (https://www.thestranger.com/slog-am/2023/11/08/79246749/slog-am-bad-night-for-seattles-progressives-bad-night-for-gop-mount-st-helens-is-restless-again)

:-D

Bye bye Sawant and the Sawantist minions. You are a ridiculous clown show and embarrassment to Seattle. What a waste of energy and toxic steaming pile of turd that has defiled Seattle for 10 f*cking years.

13

Not at all surprising the other CMs shut her out - what is the upside of cooperating with a peer that has done nothing but grandstand, villainize and vote down everything else they put forward?

15

Hannah, you poor dear.

18

Yet another example of how/why radical Lefties just lost an election.

19

How about their inability to act on opioid ODs? There's a genocide they could do something about a bit closer to home.

20

This trash article is why The Stranger had to move to some dumpy building in sodo.

21

@19: is "self-genocide" a thing?

22

"Never try to wrestle a pig. Your clothes get all muddy and the pig enjoys it."

26

Part of me is going to miss the performance art collective know as Kshama Sawant (nothing like manufactured rage and grandstanding to keep council meetings entertaining).

If the Seattle City Council wants to actually save lives, their time would be better spent addressing our opioid crisis. Roughly 25 people suffer a fatal overdose every week in our region: https://kingcounty.gov/en/dept/dph/health-safety/medical-examiner/reports-dashboards/overdose-deaths-dashboard.

35

Oh, for fuck's sake. To say that any elected official at any level who does not condemn what is happening in Gaza is complicit is ludicrous. Yep, those School Board members and irrigation district board members' hands are just soaked with blood.

NOTHING that our City Council does or doesn't do will affect what's happening over there in any way. Israel is not going to give a fuck what Sawant and her sophomoric followers think. Maybe the Council could, I dunno, run the city?
