@1 let people do what they want. Freedom is messy. Very messy. If an individual later regrets a choice they made with their freedom, it's their problem. All I ask is should anyone regret a choice they made they don't blame it on anybody else but themselves. Own your mistake.

6

@5: True for adults. But do you really think a child would have that awareness unencumbered by adults with their own agendas?

7

@6 no but now the adults responsible have to suck up their mistake and endure potential lawsuits meekly and with humility. Did I mention freedom is messy?

9

@8 So your theory was if you just put "Sane" in your screen name, no one would suspect?

10

Youth suicide has not "skyrocketed." Youth and young adults ages 10–24 years account for 14% of all suicides. The suicide rate for this age group (10.5 per 100,000) is lower than other age groups.

But straight white male over 40 suicides have. Middle-aged adults (aged 35–64 years) account for 47.2% of all suicides in the United States, and suicide is the 9th leading cause of death for this age group.

https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/facts/disparities-in-suicide.html

Among middle-aged men, suicide rates were highest for non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaskan Native (AI/AN) men (36.0 suicides per 100,000), followed closely by non-Hispanic white men (35.3 per 100,000).

The fact that most of just assume his idiotic premises without, you know, actually looking at facts tells how fucking stupid and troll-saturated this site has become. The least you could do is report that trolls account again.

13

@1 Ignoring all the data so you can simultaneously complain about both suicide rates and the healthcare access that reduces them is a fascinating strategy. Easy to foil though.

"In this prospective cohort of 104 TNB youths aged 13 to 20 years, receipt of gender-affirming care, including puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones, was associated with 60% lower odds of moderate or severe depression and 73% lower odds of suicidality over a 12-month follow-up" -nearly the first thing written on the first of the 6 studies matt linked.

14

@11 and yet they are not banning nose jobs or fake tits for teenagers.

16

Let’s see, if I was a happy young person who suddenly starting bleeding from between my legs, and was told this was the start of a 40-year stretch of having my body constantly judged to impossible standards of thinness and beauty, all the while at permanent risk for sexual assault from a bewilderingly large number and variety of males — and at the end of those four decades, I’d be all but ignored — then I’d probably be tremendously in favor of taking up residence in a new body, a body in which little to none of the above applied.

17

@16: Okay, that's your silly take on FTM, let's hear your theory on MTF!

19

What’s most disconcerting about this topic and comments is not the subject matter it’s the framing of the debate. From Matt labeling any questioning of the bill as “anti trans” to the noble professor once again referring to people as trolls. These things are not decided science and time and again if you so much as question the orthodoxy you are labeled an extremist. We can all agree that allowing people with not fully formed brains to permanently alter their body is bad so we need to question why there is such a rapid rise in people who identify as trans. That’s not anti trans that’s actually doing the work. If you ever see an issue that is undecided or unproven and people telling you that even questioning it is proof you are a vile person that should immediately be a red flag that they are full of shit.

When I was a little kid I would always love to play with the doll houses of a little girl at the home of a family we'd often visit. In today's world, I'd be forced into little dresses and on the road to having my little penis chopped off by overzealous parents and teachers in their quest to "save" me from a life of toxic masculinity or even in some cases by their twisted Munchausen's syndrome by proxy as they want to bask in my lifetime of medicalization and attention.

Most "trans" kids are actually gay kids.

21

@17: I gave one possible incentive that pubescent girls might have for identifying as trans. One of my lifelong friends recently transitioned, and at my request she wrote me a long account of going in the other direction, which obviously differed completely from my speculation at @16.

As @19 notes, we simply don’t know enough about human sexuality, psychology, and sociology to make concrete conclusions. To that I would add accepting laws from persons who’ve long been anti-choice and anti-LGBTQ seems unlikely to help us gain that necessary understanding.

22

@21: Points well taken. This is such a head-spinning cluster of issues on so many levels.

My longest friend in the Seattle area is a transgender woman who transitioned in her forties. She hit the jackpot of happiness and married an ex-marine who loves her and cherishes her as a woman. They travel the world.

And I remember how sad "he" was before.

So it's an adult decision that can bring great joy. But here is a risk of regret as well as medical complications. Only a fool would discount that. Let's not rob future adults of their own adult decisions that they deserve to make by themselves and only by themselves.

23

@20: Hysteria much? If you’re the age I think you are, then you were playing with dolls at around the same time I was playing house in kindergarten with the girls. The concern back then would have been each of our actions being a sign of latent homosexuality. (Turned out to be wrong in my case, although years later, I did in fact buy the soundtrack album for the film, “Xanadu.”) No one is talking about re-assigning gender of small children. Ranting on about such nonsense brings nothing of value to any dialog.

25

Good educators, parents, church leaders and politicians know some kids, especially those with low esteem, like to copy to make themselves look cool to their peers. Unfortunately, some think that 'cosplaying' LGBQT+ is the ticket.

The LGBQT+ community discovered this and are working 24/7 to turn our kids.

These kids need mental therapy, NOT pandering and political correctness that makes it worse😉
