Yes! Go big, go bold, go for the full twenty!

Twenty years is a long time. It's going to be fun, watching them rat out everyone who foolishly trusted them, as they squirm cravenly to avoid that sentence. Can we follow the trail back to Trump?

18 U.S. Code § 2384 - Seditious conspiracy

"If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both."

We still have those underground, windowless cells left over from the Cold War, I hope?

This is important news, too. Department of Homeland Security outlines 'heightened threat' due to Republican lies about election fraud and racist conspiracies

On Tuesday, the National Terrorism Advisory System put out a bulletin warning of a “heightened threat environment” with possible targets, warning that “[t]hese targets could include public gatherings, faith-based institutions, schools, racial and religious minorities, government facilities and personnel, U.S. critical infrastructure, the media, and perceived ideological opponents.”

In other words—the threat is everywhere.

Man, it's horrible to think/admit this, but I don't really even care all that much about the insurrection investigation at this point. Like, the people who participated should absolutely be punished and shamed to the fullest extent possible. They're freaking traitors and abhorrent people, but the country at large has now very publicly and unequivocally communicated that the people who enabled and facilitated their efforts are wholly unaccountable for their actions.

At this point I really think I'd like to put all of my political energy into broadening support to disband/abolish the freaking senate. It won't happen in my lifetime of course, but the more attention that can be called to the fundamentally undemocratic nature of it's very existence, the closer we'll get to achieving something more closely resembling actual representative democracy for future generations. Or at the very least, strip it of it's disproportionately influential and impactful powers, most importantly those relating to confirming judicial nominations, but also anything legislative in nature. If the body needs to continue to exist as an homage to the founding fathers or whatever, then fine, treat it the way England does their monarchy. Let them have their elective positions and exist as historical figureheads, but strip them of the power to implement policy that impacts people's lives.

I didn't mean to repost. This website sucks. It seemed like my comment wasn't posting (it kept stating there were 0 comments).

@8: You're assuming they didn't call for backups and you're assuming a life preserver was nearby.

@10: Not your fault xina. It seems until a PM/AM Slog has aged with subsequent AM/PM Slogs, it will say zero comments. But you can see existing comments by clicking 'Post Comment' without a comment.

14

@12: Let's be accurate. The report doesn't say when the boat, or other help, was called.

I suggest waiting for the investigation to complete before using this tragedy as a cop-bashing talking post.

@17,

That's an interesting thought experiment for sure, though I've long since believed the senate made a good deal more sense as an institution when initially conceived, as the population was a tiny fraction of that which exists today, states interests were even more regionally diverse, and the current day inter-connectedness made possible by way of travel & technology didn't exist.

23

Also is, as with most things relating to our hundreds of year old socio-political systems, worth noting that the framers didn't foresee the de-evolution to the garbage-assed, two-party system that renders nuanced discourse irrelevant.

Nerd comment. Shrink you font-size down from 1.375rem to 1.1rem; and slightly widen the gutters so the para's are not to many characters in wide. If so it will actually be possible to read your writing on the new site. Really, it's barely legible atm and not worth spending anytime on the Slog.
