These majestic sea creatures will no longer delight passers-by in Ballard. Oleg Gavrilin | Getty

Those "majestic creatures" feast on returning salmon seriously depleting the runs. Just because a rich guy did it does not make it automatically evil.

And yes I know there are many other factors in the decline of salmon populations, but sea lions are clearly one of them.

2

“Where is she? Where is the pink-haired freak? Where is the pedophile librarian?”

When a Mich. library refused to remove an LGBTQ memoir, people harassed two librarians out of their jobs.

Then they voted to defund the town's only public library"

And yet some very willfully ignorant people would still have us try to seek a middle ground with these degenerates and continue to believe they can be reasoned with through civility. Keep fucking that chicken.

5

"Eat the rich" is also stochastic terrorism but, lucky for the rich, the hyperbolic far left is vegetarian

@'Eat the Rich'
you left out thee
most Important Part:
'BEFORE they Eat You.'

8

@5: Some of the worlds richest are among the hyperbolic far-left, as well as those on the right.

Their yacht buffets are to die for.

'Another reason John Goodman sucks:'
As this is such a famous name, SLOG might want to note that this John Goodman is not the movie actor......assuming that's correct.....which I don't know......because SLOG's reporting is as poor as always. Regardless, the sea lions deserve to be evicted. As anyone can see from the photo, they are into public orgiastic behavior which will scar the psyches of small children and more sensitive adults. (Again, for the spiritually challenged, that last is sarcasm.)

"....the pro-censorship conservatives are saying that kids.....shouldn't be able to read a survivor's account of the crime......."
When are fools like these....on BOTH the right & the left.....going to realize that forcible restrictions on personal liberty are pretty much ALWAYS counter productive to your cause?

@2, I don't know about anyone else specifically, but for me, whenever I urge compromise with fanatics, it's because I'm outnumbered and I'm hoping to get SOMETHING rather than nothing at all......and then hopefully completely defeat them sometime in the future.

@4, it's a universal problem. Again I refer you to the expression the Romans had thousands of years ago: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (Who will watch the watchers?) To break the 20+ hour trip to Montevideo last month, I chose a 12 hour layover in Lima Peru so I could get a room & some sleep. The Bed & Breakfast guy who picked me up and dropped me back at the airport, at the gate, mumbled an offhand comment about the police being corrupt. I don't think he even realized that he said it. While I do think police who are mindlessly vindictive should be rooted out, be glad you don't have to pay a bribe just to get into the airport parking lot. (I'm not saying a bribe was paid. Just that the driver seemed that disgusted.)

@6, Take a close look at the Derek Chauvin trial. Whatever you think of him, they obviously stacked the jury. And even more obviously, Chauvin's superiors, the people who are actually responsible for policing in MN, in order to save themselves, threw Chauvin under the bus as hard & as close to the wheels as they could. It can be done.

And in case you want some more to worry about in terms of Climate Change, at this moment it's a sunny, 77F degrees here in Montevideo where I came to escape the summer heat in the US. (Should be in the 50s) It's "February" here in Uruguay......though, it is right on the ocean.

@10 Almost every single river in Europe is in drought revealing "hunger stones" the stones ( some going back to the 11th and 15th centuries) with carved water level markings on them to help predict famine.

Landlords – both individual and corporate – have gotten so corrupt in the past several years, but primarily since 2008, that it is hard not to despise them. The bigger, the richer they are, the more despicable. Let’s talk about the LLC sometime. It’s so fucking depressing (https://knock-la.com/los-angeles-rental-speculation-4022d16a0d28/). No wonder people are clawing each other over a $700,000 shack. Anything not to have to deal with landlords.

But…about the sea lions. I am, if you don’t know, a great lover of animals wild and domestic. I will never ever be OK with harpoons and rifles to solve a problem. But if you’re trying to save salmon – which, let’s face it, are almost extinct in the Pacific Northwest, it’s probably not a great idea providing a front porch for a predator right where they try to swim home to spawn. I’m sure that for Mr. Goodman, helping the salmon is just a by-product of what he’s really trying to do. Despicable.

Among the many, many things that have changed since I was a boy is college. Time was you went to college or you didn’t. Those that didn’t learned a skill. College was for learning about the world beyond your own. It was always sort of pricey, but you could manage if you tried hard enough or if you had smart or wealthy parents. All that’s gone now. Now you need loans and loans and loans. College is a 4-year hayride for many, and they graduate with a worthless degree and a $100K debt. Folks, it's stupid to go to college and study history unless you want to teach which will require graduate credentials. You almost certainly aren’t going to earn a living in theatre arts or art history or archeology. So, unless you are a Kennedy or a Rockefeller heir, please don’t major in them. And if you are taking out loans, make sure your field of study earns at least a hundred grand a year. Sorry about all of this. I wish it was 1962 and we could sing about dear old Alma Mater at our 25th reunion, but the world is what it has become.

If someone set Alex Jones on fire, that blaze would last for days.

I don’t give a fuck about Texas or Florida today. They’ve shown me no love.

Have a nice, cooler weekend, all.

In order to produce one masterpiece it takes thousands of failures. We do not a have culture if we don't nurture failure. If everyone has to go into the same "successful" fields (thus eventually devaluing those fields as well) then you do not get the breadth and depth of a full culture. To demand everyone be a software engineer or go into STEM essentially means you do not believe in culture, art, music. You do not believe in civilization.

We never know where breakthroughs happen. We never know where the fertile gourds of creativity and culture may lay. Weirdos going off immersing themselves in bizarre niches of academia provide the fuel for art, science, advancement and culture.

That people study, FE, paleo-anthropologic biology and what Neanderthals ate is how we tangentially have discovered amazing insights about about gut biome, food systems and modern health (and that the popular Paleo-diet is horseshit).

And all those weirdos going off studying all these unprofitable things do not deserve to live in debt and poverty.

14

"A North Texas school named George Dawson Middle School will restrict students' access to a book written by ... George Dawson.": Every day brings new evidence in support of Karl Marx's assertion that history - in this case, mid-20th-century fascism - repeats itself as farce. It's still malignant, of course, but it's also ridiculous.

15

@13 - "And all those weirdos going off studying all these unprofitable things do not deserve to live in debt and poverty."

I couldn't agree more. I know how important the humanities are to civilization. It's what makes life livable. I'm just advising not taking on thousands and thousands in debt in a field of study when, upon graduation, you'll be spinning the Wheel of Fortune in the job market.

16

I'm advising that we fix compensation structure, education costs, housing costs and the healthcare system so that people can study esoteric crazy shit and not live like terrified burrowing rats.

Because a healthy chunk of the rest of the civilized OEDC world has made it so people CAN, while not live like kings, not starve, not be homeless, and not go without healthcare. And so culture flourishes in those places as a result.

I think we can do that too. Being much more wealthy. Supposedly.

A society should be PROUD it has people who make a living doing... I dunno... collage art or whatever. Those are earmarks of cultural success. Why the morons in here are constantly stabbing culture in the back with their vindictive puritanical bullshit is bewildering.

Leave it to Texas (also the RWNJ-controlled school textbook manufacturing capital--SURPRISE!!) and Florida to be the Proud Boy leaders in the dumbfucking of the U.S. It must be all that damned heat and humidity that makes 'em so batshit crazy.

YIKES about this weekend's forecast traffic congestion! I'm glad I don't have any reason to drive on I-5, SR 520, I-405, or I-90. I feel sorry for anyone who has to commute on those routes. ICK!

I'm also humbly grateful to have paid off my student loans in 1995, and managed to avoid taking out ANY student loans while earning my BA of Music at Western Washington University. I can't imagine being $100K (or more!) in student loan debt, especially at the current interest rates.

@16 RogertheShrubber: MAGAts will diss anything they don't understand that requires a reading comprehension above the 5th grade level. Elmer and his roomies have been desperately struggling for years.

20

@13 and @15: the public libraries of the US exist to expand any and all minds that care to have them expanded in a wide range of subjects. No tuition required, only the motivation to learn. Learning and credentialing - NOT the same thing.

I agree 100% with what you say about picking your field of study with an eye toward earning a living post grad. But there IS money to be made studying History, Art, or Archaeology. You just have to have a specific, REALISTIC plan to do it. A patron would be nice too.

@13, and I agree 100% with you also....which is why education should be as close to free as possible......or at least as affordable as possible. I once won a full boat scholarship to the state college I attended. It was $135/semester. Imagine how many years ago THAT was.

I remember when I was in college we thought the art majors were all hippy freaks......years later I ran into many of them making scads of money working as graphic designers at high end print shops. To an extent, you really never know where a path leads.

@17, Amen.
