Thanks for the song you posted, itā€™s just what I needed this morning. However I regret to inform The Stranger that as much as I would love to live in the fantasyland they inhabit, here in the real world I shall very UNaccidentally ā€œvote for someone who thinks jail is a viable solution to crime.ā€

"I know weā€™re all excited about that time people put shoes on their head at the Marinerā€™s game, but is anyone excited about the Mariners' new Hatback Sports Bar and Grille?"

You guys need to decide whether you want to treat Mariners as a singular or plural possessive. Doing it both ways in the same sentence makes you look like all those morons in the comments who don't understand how to use an apostrophe. I mean, yeah, readers already have super low expectations for the editing here, but at least make an effort every now and then.

I know we need the rain, but I'm loving this extended summer. Except for the Bolt Fire smoke.

I actually know someone who's paid to get frozen at that AZ lab - over 100K. I don't think it's going to work and that he's getting scammed, but I'll never know, will I?

5

Man, the cryogenics shit really is pretty fascinating and wacky. It's worth noting that to date, noone has ever been unfrozen. Seems like someone should probably volunteer for that first, just to see if it's even a viable option from a biological standpoint or whatever. It sounds like there's not a consensus there among those who've researched it.

6

@4,

Gah, somehow didn't see your comment before posting mine. You should ask that person if they'll allow him/her to volunteer to just go for a temporary freeze, come back in a decade or whatever. You can let them know they'll be able to skip over 10 years of disappointing ends to Mariner seasons.

The carceral system isn't a "solution" to crime. It provides a disincentive to commit crimes based on individual perception about likelihood of punishment and, to a lesser extent, severity of that punishment. It may well be that crime can be brought down by addressing the "root causes" we so often hear referenced by the Stranger, but the even most optimistic take on those approaches is that they would take a generation to have a noticeable effect on crime rates.

(And if "address the root causes" means "re-make society from top to bottom, eliminating economic inequality" then it would be safe to assume it will take ... considerably longer.)

@20 hmmm if only we had a place, like a building where we could separate them from society so they no longer have the opportunity to prey on innocent people. There are plenty of opp in jail where prisoners can better themselves or get treatment but you canā€™t make them accept it or want to get better. Until then the best we can do is keep them somewhere where they cant hurt themsleves or others. If you find that somehow cruel than so be it.

23

"There are plenty of opp in jail where prisoners can better themselves or get treatment"

This is patently false. Why do you say stupid over confident shit like this as if you are any authority or know anything about this?

https://www.aclu.org/news/prisoners-rights/prisons-refusal-provide-adequate-opioid

Almost 65% of US prisoners have drug or alcohol dependency issues (SUD). There is not enough funding, beds, medications, or councilors for 65% of the 1.3 MILLION US prisoners to get adequate addiction treatment or mental health counseling. Christ. Most people on the outside can hardly get treatment. And this is only been made worse by the ravages of the pandemic.

While drug addiction treatment program certainly do achieve success when they are available and done correctly there are not enough of them and funding is constantly placed under the axe. (the 'ol Heritage Foundation notoriously lobbying against funding these programs as a matter of pride, FI).

This is also belied by the wide availability of drugs INSIDE US prisons. Which often the caretaker establishment is easily and casually bribed into smuggling inside.

Now. If only there were well known articles, books and documentaries about this topic...

24

@23 oh yes I guess since there isnā€™t the quality of care similar to what celebrities get down in Malibu that must mean there is nothing and we should just let everyone out to commit more offenses until we can provide premium care along with a condo in Belltown. You and the rest of your progressive friends are so full of shit. The good news is more and more people are seeing through it now and realizing your ā€œsolutionsā€ are worse than the actual problems. There ARE programs in prison

https://www.doc.wa.gov/corrections/programs/default.htm

If they donā€™t meet your standards thatā€™s your problem and again if those whose choices led them to prison are unwilling or incapable of taking advantage of them then Iā€™m ok with letting them sit there to protect the rest of us.

Is there a reason this cryogenics stuff is currently making the rounds? Cryogenics (and alcor) has been around for decades and decades. Are kids just learning about this now or is there some new element to all of this?

Also, why is yesterday's PM just one long post with comments turned off. Is that how Slog will be from now on?
