Governor Inslee would like the State Legislature to send him some housing bills to sign, pretty please. Lester Black

Yes, everyone should be housed.
Except for those Republicans- get them out of the House!

7

What makes you think that any of us will be able to view the northeastern horizon at midnight tonight?

10

Obviously @1 @2 @3 @4 @6 are high on something.

11

Creating more high-end rentals may, eventually, provide more low-end rentals, provided:
1. The poorer renters can wait 20 years for the market to shake out and provide housing at a "market rate" they can afford.
2. More high-end renters don't move here to occupy the additional housing capacity in the interim.

In the meantime, if you're living somewhere affordable, make plans for what happens when your landlord sells the place you're currently living in to developers who will charge "market rate," because that story is going to play out again and again for the foreseeable future.

@4 I know you are not intelligent enough to understand this, few right-wing nut-jobs are, but firearms are not the exclusive province of the Fascist Right. It only looks like that because you lunatics have been self-excluding for decades. There used to be Democrats who were active in the NRA, back when it saw itself as a marksmanship and firearms safety organization. Then wealthy Fascists decided to take it over, and turn the NRA into a partisan organization they could fund Republicans through. We had a Democratic state senator involved in the Washington Arms Collectors, until they followed the NRA, and decided to support his Republican opponent, who wasn't a shooter, much less a member. We Democrats immediately left. I can remember when I stopped going to my favorite indoor pistol range. So you never see liberal gun owners, because we don't usually talk guns in liberal political circles, and if we're at the range or gun store, we hide being liberals. You also miss us because we are much more secure in our sexuality, and don't have to parade with guns to feel like men. But hey, we're all over the place. We're just not the Northeast centrist establishment Democrats you you associate with wanting to ban guns. The reality is, the further to the left of center you get, the more common gun ownership gets. Oh, and that only increased as Trump came to power, and armed Fascist domestic terrorist groups became more brazen.

"Speeding and impairment remain consistent causes of the deaths"

Too bad this little tidbit isn't included when the Stranger says that inanimate objects (roads, cars) are the problem.

15

@4 Meanwhile gun licenses in red states are falling. Weird. Do you know what causation is? Maybe look it up.

17

@14: And, as the answer to both speeding and drunk/high driving is more aggressive law enforcement, we canā€™t expect the Stranger to get on board with that, because the Stranger now equals the NRA when it come to abolition of laws they happen not to like. So theyā€™ll keep blaming SDOT or whomever as pedestrians and cyclists die needlessly.

"Without a youth jail, what should be done with juveniles car jacking with weapons? A stern talking to? Restorative justice? What if they won't voluntarily submit to either?"

Their model proposes replacing the jail with alternative service providers who focus more on rehabilitation and care, rather than strictly on incarceration, though some such facilities will also be involuntarily residential. This took me two seconds to find and would seem to address your questions, though I'm sure you won't shut the fuck up about it, because you're a fucking idiot.

Really appreciate your opinions given your law background Will. Would love to hear more concrete details in some of these segments, I know itā€™s the Slog but Iā€™d like to better understand where your coming from with some of these views.

In particular Iā€™m writing because I feel describing the Supreme Court as primarily political is extremely unhelpful.

The Supreme Courts politicization should be monitored closely, but a poll of people (and mostly Dems) believing it is political does not make it broken or captured. Many of the decisions you refer to are well founded in originalism, which is about as apolitical as possible. Not to say Iā€™m not skeptical, but I would look to you for concrete gaps in this thinking.

If the country views the Supreme Court as an extension of DNC/RNC then we are much more vulnerable to the actual capture of the institution by the majority political party impeaching an ā€œillegitimateā€ court and replacing it with their own. This is what worries me and why I think itā€™s important to follow facts vs pushing a narrative in this case.

The Supreme Court cannot avoid being influenced by politics, but it is design to give justices maximum independence.

20

@18: Well gee, that's comforting. We can leave our doors unlocked now.

21

Until we can solve our impending electric grid crisis and prevent transformer attacks like those in Pierce county, I will absolutely never give up my gas stove or fireplace. The fireplace is the only thing that kept us warm in the myriad of power outages we've had over the past few months, and I can light my stove with a lighter even with the power out and still cook a meal. Just adding "gas fireplace and stove" to the list of reasons not to have kids, I guess.

22

@18: ā€œā€¦though some such facilities will also be involuntarily residential.ā€

As ā€œNo Youth Involuntary Residencesā€ wonā€™t fit in a protest sign, and the protesters probably canā€™t chant it in unison well or even for very long, resulting in Nikkita Oliver wandering off to Detroit without saying goodbye, we do indeed seem to have solved all of the problems associated with King County Youth Jail.

Then, all we need do is change the facilityā€™s name to ā€œJunior Alternative Involuntary Living,ā€ and King County wonā€™t even have to incur the expense of changing their stationery.

Problems solved! Thank you for showing us the way forward.

24

@22,

I wasn't showing any way forward to anyone and certainly wasn't defending or advocating for the proposal. Just providing a link to someone who was apparently incapable of finding it on his own.

25

@22: You really did inherit blipā€™s hatred of humor, didnā€™t you? You poor bastard. ;-)

26

Blip was funny as shit! As humor, it was often pretty bleak and dark, but funny all the same. Def my bad if I mis-read your comment there, though that last part seemed pretty targeted (the preceding portion wasn't bad I'll admit.)

27

@11 - No, creating more high end rentals will not create more low-end rentals. But it will sure as hell create more middle-price rentals as it will become much harder to get high rents for older units with fewer amenities. And that will take pressure off lots of people. In contrast, NOT creating more apartments will help nothing and no one.

Here in Seattle, the only thing that is going to create low-end rentals is public housing or large changes in the law. Under current law, the risk to landlords who offer cheap apartments is incredible. There's a very real risk of getting stuck footing the bill for a tenant who can't or won't pay the rent for months or more. No one in their right mind would set out to do that.

If the city wants to put its money where its scarf-covered mouth is, it ought to be building a shitload of public housing. But that would be like real work - it's easier and a lot more fun to rant about landlords and pass laws that make finding housing even harder for poor people.
