The "Doomsday Clock" is such a yesteryear gimmick that can be disregarded. Nothing really that scientific about it at all. Just scare porn for the talking heads to crow about it on MSNBC and on The View.

10

If armageddon happens, will anyone be alive to move the clock to midnight?

"bad trips" is a ridiculous criteria/excuse to not legalize.

where's slog PM been?

welcome back Nathalie!

12

Yes! Great to see Nathalie back. Now bring back the print edition please.

I was totally expecting the doomsday clock to go down to 60 seconds and I'm sure that was discussed, but I suspect many board members felt such a big change could undermine support for military aid to Ukraine, particularly among left-leaning parties, so they settled for a token 10 seconds, just enough to indicate that the world situation is still trending downward. Probably the wise decision.

14

Nathalie! Yay!!
Welcome back!
And yes, Raindrop is right-
the Doomsday Clock is a gimmick as old as avocado shag carpet.

17

Oops, my "Yes!" comment was not an expression of agreement with @11. Will does a good job here too.

Some states have received federal waivers enabling EBT recipients to buy hot food at approved restaurants (mostly corporate chains) but Washington for some reason isn't participating.

@15 Your concern about rich kids getting a free ride is reasonable, but generally speaking I'm not a fan of means testing. In certain cases where a resource is truly scarce (such as housing) it's arguably necessary, but overall I'd prefer to make the rich pay their fair share up front in taxes, and then if any of them want access to our measly safety-net programs, let 'em have it. Universal access sans paperwork makes things easier for the truly needy, helps provide political cover for the program (case in point: Social Security) and may even be cheaper than maintaining a bureaucracy to do means testing. In addition, free school lunch for all prevents the stigmatizing of poor kids ("lunch shaming"). It's well worth supporting even if it does mean a few rich families (you know, the ones whose kids actually attend public school) save a few extra bucks.

19

@9 Hahaha.

I too feel that The Sottel Strangar is leftist garboge. So much so that I must come hur everyday, all dayz and yell at komunizt Kawama Shwarma because she controls all life on earth.

20

@11: Better for Nathalie's well-rounded dispositions and professionalism to rub off on other staffers.

@14: Avocado shag! That's old! Along with wood paneling and lava lamps as well.

If you are waiting for the Catholic church to catch up to 2023, you better plan on living another 400 years. I still wonder why anyone would want to be a member of that club or any related club. Such a con.

OK, so offering school students mid-day nutrition would be the inroad to a welfare state. Quite a leap in logic from someone who probably never had to go to school without lunch money. Let’s ask the French, who have provided student meals since the end of WWII, if it has turned the country into a nation of the shiftless. And by the way, when the French do a school lunch, it ain’t pre-fab, industrial hot dogs or hamburgers and fries. It’s something to write home about.

I was reading that Germany, who promised tanks to Ukraine earlier, was very uneasy about being the first, and heretofore only country to send them – out of fear of a Russian response. The article stated that Germany still quakes at the thought of risking a war with anyone. I understand the reticence. So perhaps the US, who was unwilling to send tanks before, changed direction to lighten the responsibility load on Germany. Here’s one thing I find so annoying about the situation in Ukraine. Russia can lob missiles all day long into Ukraine, and Ukrainians, sadly, deal with it as best they can, but if Ukraine were to retaliate and lob a few into Moscow, well, it’s no longer 90 seconds to midnight. It’s twelve o’clock sharp. Does anyone see an end to this?

@19 You are overlooking entertainment value of leftist garbage.

26

The Free School Lunch to everyone is an attempt to get rid of more of their awful, institutional food. I'll bet few are buying it because it's awful, so they are giving it away.

28

Welcome back, Nat! Now I'll have to be more diligent about reading the Slog than I have been of late.

@ 21 That's exactly why we're sending 30 M-1 Abrams to Ukraine, to provide political cover to the reluctant Olaf Scholz of Germany, so he can send the more appropriate Leopard II tanks to Ukraine. But oh boy, a whole 14 of them; look out now, Russia!

I was telling my wife just two nights ago that if Scholz needs us to send M-1's to give him political cover to send Leopards and allow other countries to re-export their Leopards (Poland, Finland and I think Slovakia say they want to do this)...then send some M-1's! Good Grief, we have 4,800 of the things; we can spare a few. Even if they just sit in a parking lot in Kiev, that's fine, as long as Ukraine gets the far easier to maintain and operate Leopard II's. Apparently. the White House came to the same reasoning.

29

@28 I agree.

The Abrams is 1970's technology! FFS we were choking on the dust behind that ass when in my brief infantry career in the 80's.

The Pentagon wants that new AbramsX. So get a couple hundred of these old rust buckets burned up in Donetsk. Seems like a perfect excuse. Arms manufacture and the military being the only acceptable form of socialism in this country. So let's stimulate that economy!

Regardless. I was surprised they requested them. The age of the tank is pretty much over. I guess unless you have a whole bunch of drunk under-equipped Russian conscripts you want to tenderize.

30

@ 29 I was 11-Hotel (TOW Gunner) in the mid-80's!

I think people are being a little quick to dismiss the tank, however. That may well be coming in the not too distant future, but I don't think that day is here yet. They (you?) are basing that dismissive view on how the Russian tanks have performed while being operated poorly by the hapless Russians. Modern heavy armor western tanks are quite a bit harder to kill than T-72's. And you still need them for effective offensive operations...which is why Ukraine wants them so desperately, to take back additional territory.

Anyhoo, we'll all get to see how they do with advanced western armor tech and gunnery tech.

31

An estimated 1,200 schools in Washington qualify for the federal free lunch program. (not just 1200 students)

Welcome back, Nathalie

33

"Currently, only around 1,200 students qualify for free lunch statewide."

Did you miss being fact-checked by randos? Because this is not accurate by a factor of x350. According to OSPI's annual eligibility report, 421,866 were enrolled in free lunch, with another 67,225 enrolled in reduce-cost lunch during the 2021-22 school year. That's not much more than were enrolled pre-pandemic, according to their data (402,028 & 77,126 in 2019-2020).

34

It’s still SlogAM/PM -
after all it’s PM somewhere!

37

Welcome back, Nathalie!

@18 CKathes and @21 Bauhaus I for the WIN! I share your thoughts and concerns.

Is it just me, or did SLOG PM officially go poof? SLOG has only offered its AM edition now since Monday. ???

38

@14 pat L and @20 raindrop: I remember avocado shag carpeting, along with shag haircuts--way back when I was a kid in the 70s. My older sisters and I had it in our shared upstairs bedroom. It looked like the floor was growing blades of grass. Dad built us a thatched hut which housed two bunkbeds past a beaded hanging entrance---like a jungle safari.
Griz is showing her age, but I can't help it. We had a cool bedroom! No lava lamps, but my high school aged sisters were big on candles.

39

@14 pat L: The Doomsday Clock makes me think of the "duck and cover" drills my older sibs and cousins had to do in public school, or bomb shelters built during the Cold War, post WWII. Much of this became Twilight Zone fodder for a number of b&w episodes on Rod Serling's sci-fi TV show.

40

@28 & @30 Morty and @29 RogertheShrubber: Here's hoping Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainians, U.S., and allies prevail over Vladimir Putin and Russia, however badass the tanks. War is so senseless. May it end soon.

41

Time to cut the pentagon’s budget and end poverty. For real and should be done.

6 and 18 YES politicians that take people’s - government’s $ and complain about paying for social needs should give up their checks NOW. And thank you for bringing up that the poor are (myself included) stigmatized and doing away with means testing would help do that.

I love all the writers and their voices speaking out about change and what could be done.

The activists on the streets need their voices heard. Main stream media does not speak for them. VIVA REVOLUTION! Keep rattling the cages folks. And speak out for those with no homes that deal with deadly police sweeps here in “nice” Seattle everyday. More deaths now under the current multimillionaire bought and sold mayor and his toadies. I am so fortunate that I am one of the people with a warm house. EVERYONE needs a warm place to go.

And now a dead young woman in the morgue by a cop who wasn’t paying attention. Where are the manslaughter charges, my dude? Just WHERE?

I am just a beat poet.
