Huh. It's almost like Fox is more about the Propaganda than the News.

Everett is not a suburb of Seattle.

The Opera browser has a better version of a Chat AI built in, with more privacy than the Bing or Chrome ones.

Don't forget the Oscars Shorts Fest this weekend - it's mostly at the Egyptian and you can actually vote for which shorts qualify for the Oscars shorts list in Animated, Documentary, and another category.

Perhaps they broke into that part of the FBI because they use child abuse as a pretense for their most potent spying tools. I am reminded of legislation that tries to make robust encryption illegal by mandating a government-controlled back door be installed into encryption software. Child abuse is abhorrent, and using it as a shield to make your unjust activities palatable to the public is also abhorrent.

Nathalie dear, are you suggesting that rail employees are deliberately derailing trains because they don't have sick leave, or are you conflating to very important issues in the rail industry: 1) The lack of 20th century employee benefits here in the 21st century, and 2) The neglect of their infrastructure on the part of the railroads?

As for the poor fellow who killed himself in the jail, it's sad, but it's not $8.5 million dollars worth of sad. If he was dead, there's nothing the employees could have done.

11

@5 Very pertinent information! Based on his level of evilness, we should now electrocute his corpse. Would that make you happy, you sad sad sod?

Jesus Christ. The point isn’t that an inmate was a bad person but the so-called professionals the tax payers fund to be the impartial caretakers of the wards of the state be at least competent enough to care if their charges are fucking dead or not.

But I get it. Our local mental defectives want the world to know how sadistically “tough” they are on crime and how bad people should be tortured to death because that solves everything.

19

Sir Toby are "drug addicts" in the room with you now? You have such a weird fixation on them. Did Daddy get hopped up on meth and beat you?

Biden betraying rail workers and forcing them back into unsafe conditions. That's the centrist way.

22

@21 it's not so much apologizing for the individual as trying to use it as another example of the public safety system should be dismantled. You are dealing with idealogues here so the find facts to fit the predetermined narrative regardless of the circumstances surrounding it (e.g. he died in jail and no one noticed immediately ergo all jails are bad).

Ok read from the fyi guy but he doesn't get to any of the reasons why things are so much higher in Seattle than other parts of the country. It says in the report taxes are excluded so the soda tax is not factored into why soda costs that much more. We all know the issues with housing but would be interesting to know why Seattle is so much higher for chips, toothpaste, haircuts etc..

23

The soda tax unfairly targets the lower income.

Being disingenuous for profit is probably as old as the hills, but it still disgusts me thoroughly. The gene that encourages a Fox superstar to tout something he/she doesn’t really believe in is the same gene that exists within an evangelical holy man who admonishes people who engage in sexual activity outside of married heterosexuality (because that’s whut JAY-sus wants) and then, later on that same Sunday, is having his ass eaten out by a 15-year-old rent boy.

I’m not surprised that so many people watch and trust Fox News because, let’s face it, there are a lot of non-bright Americans, but you’d think the wisdom of age would teach them something, would make them en garde to scams and utter bullshit. But no. Older Americans are Fox’s largest demographic. How can you live so long and not be at least a little leery or cynical? One can check into plenty of hotels or motels across this country that don’t have HBO or even a PBS station, but they all have Fox News. That is, for me, depressing.

Maybe it’s as simple as older people, seeing their world disappear bit-by-bit on a daily basis, think Sean Hannity, with his (phony) bravado and robust disapprovals, will help bring it all back again. Sorry, folks. That’s not how it works, and at your age you should know that.

Now excuse me while I go have a couple of spoonfuls of Geritol.

Lovely weekend, all.

25

@24- perhaps age-related dementia is more common than we think.

Kris, I knew there was a reason why I liked you.

@24
Yes Bauhaus
Lovely weekend to you and to all!

29

My favorite quote from the Fox News dump is when one of their executives said that Lou Dobbs’s show “made North Korean news look nuanced.” There are some real golden nuggets in there about what Fox thinks about their own audience, they know exactly what they’re doing.

30

Sir Toby II @18 I don't know if it was a factor in this case, but US prisons regularly use punishments that are internationally recognized as torture, such as long periods of solitary confinement. Just because the government wrote down "it's OK to do this" on a piece of paper dosen't make it OK in reality.

31

@30: If you read the linked account, Lara made a nuisance of himself until the employees he’d harassed (who were dispatchers, not law enforcement officers) stuck him in a basement cell, where he could conceal himself and commit suicide. They really hadn’t thought he was at risk for suicide, and were probably relieved when he finally went quiet. There’s zero evidence, at least thus far, that they’d mistreated him in any way.

As odious as Roger Ailes was, he would have been too savvy to let the stolen election narrative get out of hand if he was still around.

Drug addiction and alcoholism is a form of mental illness or insanity. People addicted are not sane. Their thinking is warped. Most alcoholics for example never make it to sobriety. The stigma certainly helps to create a hateful atmosphere around those sad folks.

The prison industrial complex is big business. There are more people incarcerated in the USA than anywhere in the world. This should be a major shame that needs to be addressed.
We do not know the dead person and assumptions can be wrong.

A large number are actually innocent of the charges. It is racist and classist.

While sitting in their police cruisers these obnoxious comments against sick people and incarcerated people they do not know are sent to this thread??? Just a guess. Could be.
But those comments are truly creepy and unnecessarily vicious.

Of course we care about the victims including the ones held in these prisons. The mask is off and your sadism is revealed. Again.

39

The horrible and preventable railway disaster in Ohio was caused by corrupt politicians and the bosses of the railway. They ignored the union’s pleas for more workers to be onboard the train for safety reasons and ignored again the need for desperately needed time off for the workers. Now that area is poisoned and the long term results are cancer etc. and a destroyed environment because of greed.

40

@2 kris for the WIN!!

@4 KEK55: I knew that, too.

@14 PrincessAngeline#2: That is horrible news to me! Where do I write this letter of concern, and to whom?
If anything, we should be preserving our greenbelts and wide open spaces (i.e: farmlands, forests, coastlines, marine life habitats such as the Salish Sea, Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, natural lakes, etc.).

Bauhaus I @24 & @26 and kristofarian @2 (agreed with Bauhaus I): I KNEW I liked you two!! :)

Bauhaus I @24 and dvs99 @25: BINGO! You both cited why Griz so happily avoids FOX TeeVee.
I want what brain tissue I've got left to expand, not turn to mush.

@38 Ivy R. Nightscales: It is indeed, truly insane about the prison industrial complex being big business.
@39 Ivy R. Nightscales: For the WIN! You nailed it. The train derailment in Ohio was indeed, as shamefully political as it was preventable--another community has been annihilated all for insatiable corporate greed. Thousands have been evacuated, and the water supply is poisoned. Local residents are in danger of cancer and have every right to be outraged.
Just recently, another train derailment happened in Detroit, Michigan. One car was carrying hazardous material.
Profiteering railroad magnates must be held accountable for their race to the bottom for the last U.S. dollar.
All this reminds me of Canada's fourth deadliest ever train derailment in Lac-Megantic, Alberta, Canada on July 6, 2013, in which 73 cars carrying Bakken crude derailed and caught fire, killing 47 people.

@24 Bauhaus I, @27 pat L, Nathalie, and fellow commenters: Happy President's Day Weekend, everyone!
Griz found a wonderful local cafe that's been around a while, and so, as a longtime resident, she tried it: Old Town Cafe. Fabulous eats, drinks, and company!
A win-win for Griz: Gluten free blueberry pancakes with sugar-free syrup available for a kickass breakfast!
I never thought I'd ever be able to enjoy pancakes again, yet here I am. I have found my favorite breakfast spot. :)

42

@38: Really? Some mentally ill are alcoholics, but not all alcoholics are mentally ill. Addiction to drugs or alcohol are not the same as the pathologies of mental illness, such as schizophrenia, right? Nevertheless, a lot of these form Venn diagrams with one another.

43

@42: You and Toby really need to get modern.

“A substance use disorder (SUD) is a mental disorder that affects a person’s brain and behavior, leading to a person’s inability to control their use of substances such as legal or illegal drugs, alcohol, or medications. Symptoms can range from moderate to severe, with addiction being the most severe form of SUDs.”

Lots more where that came from,
https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/substance-use-and-mental-health

That should at least keep you guys from sounding like Victorian moralizers.

44

@43: Nice try, but no. Your quote isn't even pertinent. Substance abuse is a disorder but it's not the same as organic mental illness and brain pathologies.

Silly boy.

45

There is a difference between abnormal psychology and being mentally healthy. If you are using a substance as a coping mechanism you are not mentally healthy. Same thing with mass shootings: mental health is an important part of the conversation, but it can't be reduced to "crazy psychopaths shoot people". If you are doing that as an outlet you are not mentally healthy, but all humans have the capacity to fall into that state, under the "right" circumstances.

The mentally unhealthy are part of our society. Out of site/out of mind politics are barbaric, cruel, and self-defeating.

46

@45: Were the Hopi and Zuni tribes of the southwest mentally unhealthy for smoking peyote in their ceremonies? Were the Incas in South America mentally unhealthy for eating coco leaves?

Is someone mentally unhealthy when they smoke pot, enjoy cocktails, or both? Only when it's excessive and interferes with their lives.

This is a subject area not suitable for hard and fast lines.

47

@44: That’s why I mentioned there was a lot more on that page than just the one quote I provided. But if you just want to congratulate yourself for playing “gotcha,” instead of actually learning something useful about the topic upon which you keep pretending expertise, well, horse to water and all that.

Spouting misunderstood medical knowledge from previous decades or even centuries doesn’t help anyone. You might want to consider that before you do it again. Just sayin’.

48

@47: So is morning coffee a SUD?

Your links to nih.gov aren't worth the pixels they occupy.

49

@48: Good thing we have Some Guy On The Internet to dismiss articles from the National Institute for Mental Health. (What could they possibly know about addiction, anyway?!?)

Looking forward to your instructive comment on how bleeding with leeches helps to draw out the bad humours.

50

@46 Agreed, it's not suitable for hard lines. There are many people who enjoy alcohol, marijuana, mushrooms, acid, and other drugs without it being a problem. But it can also be a problem. I didn't say "if somebody ever consumes a psychoactive substance they have a problem" because that would be idiotic. I said "if somebody is using a substance as a coping mechanism". There is a difference.

51

@45: When we understand how many if the homeless struggle with mental disorders, we can understand just how cruel, albeit unintentionally, Seattle was towards them by allowing encampments. Allowing encampments but providing no treatment was enabling on a grand scale. It turned persons struggling with substance abuse into full-blown addicts. We’ll never know how many persons Seattle could have saved by sweeping encampments early and often.

53

@52: I don’t know the origin of the term. I do recall attending a lecture by Dr. John Medina, neuroscientist at UW and author of the “Brain Rules” book series, in which he claimed neurochemistry, not will power, determined entirely whether or not a person could stop using a substance.

As you can read @52, I believe we need to keep persons with mental disorders from living together in encampments. All encampments do is enable drug addictions, and other negative outcomes of mental disorders. Allowing encampments was never compassionate; it was (and is) cruelty toward our most vulnerable persons. (The effect of encampments on everyone else isn’t exactly positive, either.)
