Starbucks screwed over these workers, but through collective action, they are now less screwed over HK

People like Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner are the reason it is totally asinine for the good folks at The Stranger to shit on people who need vehicles to get to work and run errands.

3

Wow Beyoncé's new album is really really bad.

I remember when Starbucks just started out back on March 30, 1971 with its first store at Pike Place Market. What made Starbucks so special was its uniqueness then as a Bohemian neighborhood coffee shop. The idea of there being multiple Starbucks locations mushroom cloud globally now--including 130 Starbucks store locations in Russia*---over the past five decades just seems a bit much since its corporate takeover (especially on 6th and 7th Avenues right across from each other downtown---seriously?? They can't crank out the frappuccinos fast enough?). I know McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell are all over, too, but...who decided to Americanize the rest of the world into one big, giant incorporated lump?

@6 Melkor: Okay, Gen-Z-er. kristofarian @5 tells it like it is. A lot of what is happening now is due to the lack of voters in 2016, whether they 1) thought well qualified former Secretary of State, First Lady, and Senator Hillary Clinton was a shoo-in and the Orange Turd, a gross incompetent lout with no experience in elected office couldn't POSSIBLY make it to the White House, 2) said "meh" out of sheer boredom and willful inaction because they didn't like any of the candidates, 3) were embittered Bernie Bros SO outraged that Clinton became the DNC Candidate for #45 (and despite winning on November 8, 2016 by 3 million popular votes had the election stolen from her by the same GOP who stole the election from Al Gore in 2000 because of An Inconvenient Truth) that well, then, if they can't have Bernie they're voting for Trump, so THERE! or 4) were completely dumb enough to have wasted their votes on a third party candidate like Gary Johnson or Jill Stein.

Like it or not, unless we hold The Party of Orange Turd criminally responsible, convict Donald Trump and its loyalists, impeach Mitch McConnell and his RepubliKKKan sock puppets Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema, as well as Clarence Thomas and his insurrectionist Ginni bitch, Brett Kavanaugh, Samuel Alito, Jr., Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, and John Roberts for allowing this septic tidal wave of neofascist bullshit, it's our inheritance from the .00000000000001%. The Earth is otherwise doomed to become uninhabitable, neofascism is the law of the land, and corrupt untaxed KKKorprate billionaires will be laughing their fat asses off riding Jeff Bezos' atrocious space dildo to their own private Elysium in outer space. We can only vote, get rid of the filibuster and Electoral College and end the tyranny of the GOP.

@7: Actually, I don't, jackoff. That's the glaring difference between you and me. We're not all MAGA sheep like you. Why don't you go count bullet-ridden bodies, you neofascist piece of shit.

@7: Stop watching FOX-TeeVee, listening to KVI, and shacking with Elmer, jackoff. You might actually learn something.
You're welcome.

Fox News, Once Home
to Trump, Now Often Ignores Him

The former president hasn’t been interviewed on the Rupert Murdoch-owned cable network in more than 100 days, and other Republicans often get the attention he once did.

The network could always be critical of him in its news coverage. But now the skepticism comes through louder — in asides from news anchors, in interviews with voters or in opinion articles for other Murdoch-owned properties.

Referring to the congressional investigation into the Jan. 6 attack, the Fox anchor Bret Baier said it had made Mr. Trump “look horrific” by detailing how it had taken 187 minutes for him to be persuaded to say anything publicly about the riot.

One recent segment on FoxNews.com featured interviews with Trump supporters who were overwhelmingly unenthusiastic about a possible third campaign, saying that they thought “his time has passed” and that he was “a little too polarizing.”

Then they offered their thoughts on who should replace him on the ticket. Unanimously, they named Mr. DeSantis.

16

@15: Not really. Are you suggesting that small business should never expand? Starbucks was once a small independent like the funky small ones you hold as a model now.

Union grievances against Starbucks don't impress me. They should find another job they enjoy doing that has a career path instead of unionizing part time temporary jobs geared for young people with greater career goals in mind.

@21,

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that I've probably got similar musical tastes as you. If nothing else, I'm not a fan of Beyonce or any other modern pop music for that matter. That said, this thing where slog's writers have been embedding a video at the end of their daily news roundups are not where you should be looking for new music to be turned onto. It's obviously nothing more than an afterthought for the writer(s) and a reflection of whatever might be on their radar at a given time. For a couple decades they'd been posting daily news roundups with no obligatory mention of music whatsoever, so perhaps you could just ignore the final piece of each AM/PM post and pretend it's two years ago? Dave Segal's still writing about less mainstream offerings and it's not like there's not a million other writers out there doing same, should you be hardup for such content.

23

Oh these kids today! What is this stuff they call “music”?! In my day we listened to cool bands!
Remember the pop in pop music stands for popular which both these artists you don’t like most definitely are. A LOT of young people love their music & some of you sound like the parents of kids playing the Beatles’ first album too loud on the hi fi.

24

@23 Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have been making music since the 1990s, last century. Who are the Beatles?

25

@24 LOL see! Every generation has their own thing. Thanks for the assist:)

26

I like the musical moment at the end of Slog. Today's pop generally doesn't appeal to me enough to click on and read an entire column about it, but it's nice to get a convenient little taste of what's new (or something old that's worth revisiting). The NYT's Paul Krugman (a Very Serious Economist who's roughly my age) sometimes does this at the end of his columns.

27

@19: Take a look in the mirror, jackoff! See ya and wouldn't wanna be ya. Try not to fall in when you flush. There's already enough toxic waste in Puget Sound already.

@20 kristofarian: +1 Agreed.

@23 & @25 Lissa: I agree that all generations certainly do have musical preferences and era-defining trends. I'm okay with most musical genres, as long as it's not obscenely loud Stealth Tomcat F-14 sonic boom level rhythmically thump-and-bump crap that rattles windows and reverberates from car stereos three blocks away. That's not music, that's just noise pollution. I'd hate to be the next door neighbor of anyone playing garbage like that. Permanent deafness must be the primary goal among its promoters and fans. Seriously.
I was on a commuter bus once, on my way home from a VA appointment. In a seat towards the back, a young girl who looked to be in her teens had on headphones blasting this shit fully cranked. A number of people around her, myself included, asked her to turn down the volume. No dice--she was completely oblivious. The driver finally had to pull over, stop the bus, and walk up the aisle to where this girl was seated tell her to turn down her headphones or get off. She started blubbering that she couldn't hear anything. I honestly don't see what the attraction is at that decibel level. I'd prefer to keep my sense of hearing intact.

28

@26 CKathes: I enjoy reading New York Times economist Paul Krugman's Op.Ed commentaries, too. He really tells it like it is.

29

It's also neat that the writers have free reign to embed any sort of audio offering into the "For Your Listening Pleasure" embed, and Will has at least occasionally chosen to use the opportunity to promote some political segment or podcast that he believes worthwhile. I don't think I've listened to many of those either, but it's still nice to be turned onto things you might not be otherwise.

30

@27: And WTF is up with road raged punks tailgating and blindly passing other drivers in lowered street rods with growling engines that rattle and pop like their late model garbage can on four tires has a serious case of the farts? I don't remember drag racing on the main streets ever being this bad. And don't get me started on big trucks.
And people wonder why my beloved VW and I stay off I-5.

31

@24 no. Swift’s first album was 2006. She was 11 yo in 1999.

32

@7/19:

Go back to counting bullet-riddled dead bodies, you worthless fuck.
