Jersey sure loves weed!
Jersey sure loves weed! EDUARDO MUNOZ ALVAREZ

This week, weed won big in elections across the country, gaining ground in New Jersey and Virginia after pro-legalization Democrats won governorships. Other states voted on various weed issues as well, with generally positive results. And a spokesperson from the DEA said they won’t go after parents who administer CBD to their kids. Read on.

New Jersey and Virginia Vote for Weed

Two Democrats who support legalization got elected as governor in both New Jersey and Virginia, and it looks like weed legalization in those states may not be far behind. In New Jersey, Phil Murphy promises to “legalize marijuana so police can focus resources on violent crimes.” The state senator who sponsored the legalization bill says it’s now “full steam ahead” for legalization in the state, which may happen as soon as April. And in Virginia, Ralph Northam wrote a letter back in August to the Virginia State Crime Commission saying cannabis possession should be decriminalized.

And in Other Weed Election News…

Detroit voters approved two measures that will make it easier for dispensaries to do business in their city, Athens, Ohio, voted to get rid of fines for producing and possessing weed, and New York voted against a holding a constitutional convention that would have possibly led towards a pathway to legalization in the state.

The DEA Probably Won’t Prosecute Parents Who Give CBD to Their Kids

Parents who administer CBD to their children to treat medical conditions like seizures and anxiety can breathe a little sigh of relief. DEA spokesperson Rusty Payne said in an interview with WTHR that even though CBD products are federally illegal, parents probably don’t have to worry about being prosecuted. Payne said he didn’t blame parents for wanting help their kids. Here’s an excerpt:

WTHR: What would you tell the mom and dad who are buying this stuff and giving it to their kids because it helps them get through the day?

Payne: Am I speaking as a DEA spokesman or as a father? Because I am a dad. As a father?

WTHR: Yes.

Payne: I'd do the same exact thing — without hesitation. I cannot blame these people for what they're doing. They are not a priority for us... it would not be an appropriate use of federal resources to go after a mother because her child has epileptic seizures and has found something that can help and has helped. Are they breaking the law? Yes, they are. Are we going to break her door down? Absolutely not. And I don't think she'll be charged by any U.S. Attorney.

And This 12-Year-Old Girl Is Suing Jeff Sessions

A sixth-grader is joining up with another kid, a military veteran, and a former pro football player to sue the U.S. Attorney General over the federal classification of cannabis. Alexis Bortell suffers from epileptic seizures. Traditional medicine wasn’t helping, and doctors were recommending brain surgery. But her family decided that wasn’t the way they wanted to go.

"As the seizures got worse, we had to move to Colorado to get cannabis because it's illegal in Texas," the girl told KDVR. Now her dad grows cannabis to help his daughter and other medical marijuana patients. Bortell takes a liquid drop of THC every morning, and hasn’t had one seizure in the past two and a half years. The federal government has so far been unable to get the case dismissed.

“I’ll Take Pot Brownies For $300, Alex”

The iconic game show host is celebrating his 34th year at Jeopardy, and in an interview with The Daily Beast, Trebek dishes about his run in with a very strong weed edible back in the day:

It was by accident! I didn’t know what they were. I had just arrived in California and went to a friend’s house for dinner, and there were brownies. I love brownies—I’m a chocoholic—and I didn’t realize that they were hash brownies. And… whoa. That threw me for a loop. I took down about a half-dozen. The dinner party was on a Friday, and I was not able to leave that house until Sunday afternoon. I spent the next day and a half in bed. It was not a good trip, and I have not done any of that stuff since!
