The merits of the infrastructure aren't what matter right now. Maybe not surprising, but I don't think activists fully appreciate how unhelpful it is to use the pandemic crisis to try and push through things that have been under consideration long before the crisis hit. Using the crisis to push through non-essential changes like the Amazon tax or permanent street closures burns political capital that is desperately needed to convince people to adhere to the truly essential steps of maintaining social distancing and wearing masks. Using crisis powers to push through permanent changes only provides unneeded fuel to the arguments that this is more a case of political opportunism than a true health crisis. If politicians are lying to us about safe street closures being temporary, are they lying about masks being beneficial and temporary too? Those are NOT helpful questions to foster.

I find it interesting that Ravenna Blvd’s protected bike lane is considered incomplete and not “all ages all levels,” while the 2nd ave bike lane is. I find the Ravenna lane one of the safest (and flattest) routes in the city, thanks to being to the right of the parkway there are no driveway, pedestrian, or door opening hazards. 2nd Ave I encounter a hazard every 10 feet.
