Remember Janet Napolitano?
She was Democratic governor of Arizona, until Obama put her in his cabinet. Then she was replaced with Janet Brewer, a Republican.
Moral of story? When you pull people out of their Senate or state positions for the Cabinet, you don't always get the replacement you want.

I tried reading @ggreenwald’s story but it needed editing

Greenwald, 2005:"The parade of evils caused by illegal immigration is widely known, and it gets worse every day. In short, illegal immigration wreaks havoc economically, socially, & culturally; makes a mockery of the rule of law; and is disgraceful just on basic fairness grounds alone."

Here's the pissy non-apology he wrote about it six years later: http://twitlonger.com/show/a2av5p. This, and Matt Hale, are the turning points of his asshole career. He holds a grudge because people called him out on hating undocumented immigrants SO MUCH he had to take half a step back.

The Stranger might but failed to review The Intercept's account: According to https://theintercept.com/2020/10/29/glenn-greenwald-resigns-the-intercept/

"The narrative Glenn presents about his departure is teeming with distortions and inaccuracies — all of them designed to make him appear as a victim, rather than a grown person throwing a tantrum."

Srsly, fvck that guy, don't make him out to be the victim, because he's not.

If you need a weapon that can handle a riot, no better choice than a Remington 270 or Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump shotgun. Choice of the US Army.

5

@4 That's the Remington 870, sorry.

8

Amazon could be reigned in easily and quickly, but what are we supposed to do? Stop taking the path of least resistance in buying shit we don't need or want once it loses it novelty?

9

@4 mostly correct, but you don't need it loaded to be effective.

Remember, if you hear Seattle is a hotbed of contagion, do the city a favor and doorbell some of the wealthy neighborhoods when you find yourself in a contagious period.

Spread the wealth.

Well at least Bezos will have the cash he needs to get in his rocket ship and fly away when everyone and everything else on earth has been destroyed. /s

@3, 6,

I don't think anyone is decrying $15/hour as a bad thing, or failing to recognize the profound impact it can have, particularly in more impoverished areas as mentioned by @3. What Chase appears to be taking issue with is Bezos' attempting to frame it as if it was an idea that Amazon spearheaded, and that it was done as a selfless measure solely taken for the benefit of their workers. The reality is that they were caving to pressure from $15 now legislation and activist campaigns across the country, and were it not for such campaigns those workers would likely be hucking packages for the bare minimum that JB could get away with paying them to do so.

And honestly, I do think he deserves a fair amount of credit for the effort and I'm glad he's doing it, but it certainly wasn't born of pure altruistic integrity on his part.

My father was in town recently and randomly gave me one of his guns. Thanks, I guess? I don't even have time to practice it, and I hear concealed carry permits are a bitch to get right now. But, you know, I did buy a holster and some speed loaders for it...on Amazon. Thing will probably sit in its locked safe until I forget the passcode.
@3 for real I have worked much worse warehouses than Amazon and for far less money. Talkin' bout stacking heavy-ass couches six-high at some shit discount furniture warehouse in the middle of summer all day...fuuuuuck that! Stranger writers are contractually bound to shit on Amazon at least once every 1500 words.

13

There have been over 20,000 Amazon employees contract Coronavirus. So, yay for Bezos for paying them $15 p/hr, I guess. But I bet they'd appreciate a safe working environment too. Or maybe hazard pay. Or both. Given that he's now the richest person on earth, by a wide margin (he blew past Bill Gates a year or so back), he could afford it.

14

@3 Amazon has DCs and sorting centers in every major metro area not just in the sticks. In many places they have DCs or sorting centers $15 doesn’t cut it.

16

Yes, let’s all cut Amazon some slack. Got knows if someone needs a break, it’s the richest dude on the planet.

21

@16 to take a page from Bernie, "well, you can be a millionaire too if you write a best-selling book..."
Well, you can be a billionaire too if you found a platform that thousands of retailers use to sell their goods. Ain't nobody stopping you. One day maybe UNICEF will open an online marketplace and donate all their profit to charity, until then most places like to keep their profits for future innovation and shareholders.
