Mark Lanegan died. Does anyone at the Stranger care?

2

Every time kexp plays them I think to myself "what is this horrible boring music" before turning it off. Sorry you had to listen to an entire show, I hope you at least brought a book or something to alleviate the boredom.

Lanegan was an amazing artist. Of all the acts that typified the grunge era (which I think is a little reductive to to box his music into merely grunge) he was by far the most original.

But that was a hard 57. His struggle with Covid19 was just the last straw for the poor guy.

4

@3 Thereby rendering his death unworthy of mention?

5

@1, 4: can you wait until Slog PM comes out before you judge? It will be the top story, prob.

Segal posted this just as the news on Lanegan was breaking.

6

@4 I mentioned it. You mentioned it. Twice. Now it’s mentioned.

This isn’t a social media page. It’s a newspaper. Give them time to maybe say something more than “a guy died.”

7

It's comforting to know the world still spits out banal rock bands. The loss of Mark Lanegan is truly sad.

8

@6 SLOG’s a newspaper?

9

It’s deep into the evening and still no word here of Lanegan’s passing.

Gonna go blast some Mad Season & pour one out for the homies.

10

@8 yes. Yes it is.

This headline post -- a series of heavily opinionated put-downs of the band, submitted as a review of their show -- brings a nostalgic smile to my face. This is how the Stranger covered music Back In The Day, in that legendary time of Seattle In The '90s. In those pre-internet days, the Stranger was our constant guide and companion, as we explored Capitol Hill and Belltown in the Seattle Music Scene days and after. Not before nor since has dyspepsia tasted so wonderful. Good times, indeed.

(For a version of this directed at local hip-hop, see https://www.thestranger.com/seattle/the-razors-edge/Content?oid=180349. Even that was fifteen years ago! Gawd, it's been a long time since the Stranger published good, snarky hit pieces. This one even generated a rebuttal from one of the targets, MC Geologic, who put his amazing way with words to full effect in "Geologic Speaks," https://www.thestranger.com/seattle/letters-to-the-editor/Content?oid=187207)

WOD's music offers fans a meditative state, you know peace within not (hate speech) and violence...

"The decline of mainstream rock". I'm saddened that artistic expression is discussed in these terms. Delince requires rank and order, a function of hierarchy plain and simple. Not to mention the historical questions, (should we Make Music Great Again?) Art is meant to liberate us from such obscene notions, yes? Even art written about art (every take in this piece is creative and not objective expression). So save the worship and damnation for church Dave. Give me life. Give me experience. Give me soul.

@1: Yes, we care. I was surprised that there was no mention in the eviction moratorium article.

Please wait...
