And personally, I'm not entirely thrilled with Zum, either. They've been transporting our ward to Nova in the CD for most of the school year, ever since they had a very triggering event occur on Metro, and frankly their drivers aren't all that stellar IMO. We've filed several complaints about them showing up an hour ahead of their scheduled pick-up time (this has happened at least a half-dozen times) and then just driving away, occasionally not showing up at all, and sometimes making unscheduled stops or side trips, which they're not supposed to do. Granted, these are automobile transports and not school buses, but if this is indicative of their overall level of service, I don't see how they would be any better than First Service's clearly second-rate performance.

Please, please, pursue this. Blow up the story. I guarantee someone at SPS is stuffing their pockets. There's no other explanation for why we'd keep a pathetic, failed provider like First Student who has proven themselves untrustworthy for YEARS.

@3 To Comte's point I don't know if you are going to get that much better service from any other providers either. There is a massive shortage of school bus drivers right now because it's not a great job. Aside from the lower pay and having to deal with kids/parents the job itself entails a split shift where you work early-mid morning have time off and then come back and work mid-afternoon. For a number of people that type of schedule is a barrier which is why many of the eastside districts gave up bus service for the majority of their students and gave them Orca cards to take Metro.

I'd agree with #5 that the whole thing has a shady feel to it though and it wouldn't surprise me if there were some shenanigans afoot however we shouldn't fool ourself that the alternative isn't still going to have warts and leave a lot of parents struggling.

@6, SPS has given ORCA cards to students old enough to use them. It’s a stretch for middle schoolers but definitely a no for k-5 so that’s not a viable option. And metro bus route realities might mean 90 mins or more/trip depending on how the routes all come together. Not sure the Eastside is offering the greatest service to families that struggle with transportation and something SPS should emulate.

Logistically, there is a huge case for keeping schools hyper local to avoid the transportation demands of cross town yellow buses. But neighborhood schools are highly segregated and some families struggle to and rely on buses even to get to those. Hauling around half empty giganto buses as we barrel towards a climate crisis doesn’t sit well with me either. It’s really time to change up the formula, people.

Good thing we're relying on our beneficent God known as "The Market" to provide essential services required for the foundation of our society by for-profit companies. No matter what, absolutely, positively DO NOT have this service run by local government with sustainable wages, benefits, and at least the chance for more transparency.

"Triggering events" can certainly happen on regular school buses too. I say put them all on Metro buses. Safety in numbers. And since when is K-5 too young? When I was in K-5 I walked a mile each way to school. It's a shame we no longer have any faith in our kids here.

@13, it became too young when buses took a dive on safety and when downtown (de facto transfer zone for bus routes) devolved into mental health/public safety instability.
