The City Is Condemned to Wait for the Unlikely Kindness of Another Billionaire

We will be forced to miss the one and likely only prince of the city, Paul Allen. Charles Mudede

Honestly, I miss the “small art” you’d see in Seattle when I moved here in the late 90s. Little movie theaters, hole in the wall venues that doubled as hair salons by day, warehouse space turned art gallery. Rock and roll museum artifacts bring the tourist dollars but I don’t find “big art” particularly inspiring. Taylor Swift wouldn’t be so crazy expensive if we as a collective hadn’t lost our taste for smaller, alternative entertainment.

Big Art is mostly valued for money laundering and tax evasion.

I have no idea what Charles considers "Big-Art Culture," but even the most cursory research reveals wealthy donors regularly providing extensive support to SAM, Seattle Asian Art Museum, Seattle Rep, Pratt, etc., etc.

In light of that, what is Charles' ranting about here? Is he upset there aren't more obscenely rich billionaires in the region, and we have to get by with the generous philanthropy of our millionaires instead?

Who is going to build the next EMP or bankroll some other ridiculous and probably awesome piece of ART for Seattle? That is the point of this post and I fully agree w Charles. I already miss our one “cool” billionaire.

Charles: Burn down the middle class and it's sensibilities!!!

Also Charles: I love me some billionaire art sensibilities and money!!!!

The Stranger: This city has crazy billionaires, which utterly justifies policies that benefit junkies and tweakers at the expense of the middle class. (Please ignore how the billionaires aren't impacted at all)

Just another day with the modern hard left, bravely defending billionaires while soaking the middle.

The Fremont Arts Council isn't going to wait.

Workshops on creating art are always in session.

Remember, the Powerhouse is your friend, at N 39th and Fremont Ave N.

Speaking of the Stranger's art beat, I just realized I haven't seen anything from Jas Keimig in a while. Did I miss the quitting announcement? Or is this just a vacation?

I thout we supoze to eat the rich..

Paul Allen's patronage of Seattle arts and culture was the poster child of the Libertarian dream for How Things Ought To Be. The collapse of that patronage in his passing exposes the folly of actually relying on that fairy tale.
